Ioannis Zorpidis was born in Greece. He studied music theory with Nikos Solomonidis, and classical guitar
with Costas Cotsiolis, at the New Conservatory, Thessaloniki. He also studied Eastern traditional music
(Oud) with Kyriakos Kalaitzidis at the En chordais school of music in Thessaloniki. He subsequently studied
stylistic composition-Tonsatz under Prof. Johannes Schild, and guitar pedagogy under Prof. Roberto Aussel,
at the Musikhochschule Köln in Germany.
He composes and arranges music for solo instruments, for various chamber ensembles, and for the theatre; he
performs guitar and oud repertoire. He is the author of the three-volume work on music theory Η ΘΕΩΡΙΑ ΜΟΥ
[My Theory], and of a guitar method entitled The Tremolo Technique, both published in Greece by Philippos
Nakas.
As a musicologist, he has carried out systematic research into the symphonic oeuvre of Mikis Theodorakis
and Charilaos Perpessas (he has authored the introduction to the edition of the Christus Symphony score,
published in 2013 by the Hellenic Music Centre).
