The title Riberas del Plata refers to both banks of the river Rio de la Plata in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay.
The milonga is a typical rhythm of that region, extending even to Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.
Urban Milonga is a variant that emerged as a subgenre of tango and is a distant relative of the slower, rural milonga. It was transcribed by several pianists at the end of the 19th century. These “traces” influenced some composers, and thus, with lyrics and music by the Afro-Argentine José Ricardo, sung by Carlos Gardel, and music performed by guitarist Guillermo Barbieri and Ricardo himself, the first known recording was the song “Un Bailongo” (1922).
