I wrote these ‘Two Little Fugues’ entirely for my own pleasure (and hopefully for that of those playing/hearing them).
Fugue (literally meaning ‘a chase’) - being a process and not a form, is largely culturally neutral and can work in any style - from its origins in the early Renaissance period with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, via the mastery achieved by J.S. Bach, Handel, and Beethoven, up to more recent composers such as Bartok, Britten, and film composer John Williams’ use of one in the ocean chase scene of the film Jaws.
These two - which alternate between two and three voices - are great fun to play (see my YouTube of video of me playing them with guitarist David Black).
These two pieces do not require a virtuoso’s technique and can easily be played by 1st-year music students.
This original version is for two guitars but they also exist in versions for guitar and viola and, slightly expanded, for three guitars.
I hope you enjoy them.
